Top 5 Deadliest Plane Crashes in India

India’s aviation has a history that began before the nation had shed off the skin of imperialism imposed on the nation by the British. In recent times, aviation in India has been marked by significant growth and modernization- though the closing of airspace during “Operation Sindoor” was a minor blip. In addition to devastating air disasters, the nation’s aviation history has also seen some staggering highjacks– the longest of which was almost a week long. These tragic accidents have resulted in the loss of hundreds of human lives and have also shown the flaws in aviation safety and management. Each of these crashes, like crashes anywhere around the world, has its technical issues, post-investigations, and policy changes. Here are the top 5 deadliest plane crashes in the history of Indian aviation.

According to an article published in The New York Times, the Judge Fitzgerald ruled that:

“.. Captain Kukar had been ”unfit to fly” because he had been taking drugs to control diabetes, had been dieting to help his condition, and had aggravated his medical problems by drinking the night before. The judge also ruled that the co-pilot had been negligent in not watching the dashboard instruments and warning the pilot.”

The major cause of the accident was the failure of Kazakh crews to maintain the correct altitude. According to the Aviation Safety Network, The factors contributing Kazak aircraft to maintain its correct altitude were:

“i) inadequate knowledge of English language of Kazak pilot, resulting in wrong interpretations of ATC instructions.
ii) poor airmanship and lack of proper CRM (Crew Resource Management) skill on the part of PIC (Pilot-in-Command) compounded by leadership quality lacking in him.
iii) Casual attitude of the crew and lack of coordination in the performance of their respective duties by crew of Kazak aircraft.
iv) Absence of standard callouts from any crew member.”
