American Airlines Flight AA2413 Aborts Takeoff After Runway Incursion with AeroLogic 777 at LAX

An American Airlines (AA), which is the busiest US airline for the month of February 2025, saw its Airbus A321 aborted its takeoff abruptly late Sunday night after an AeroLogic Boeing 777 crossed its assigned runway. The incident, which occurred at around 10:33 p.m. local time at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) [which is the fifth-busiest US airport] prompted the crew to “slam on the brakes” to avoid a collision.

American airlines A321 aborts takeoff

American Airlines flight AA 2453, bound for Boston, was carrying 94 passengers and seven crew members when the crew observed a cargo aircraft entering their runway path. Let’s take a look at the details of the flight: operated by AA.

American Airlines operates a total 998 aircraft. Of these, 218 aircraft are of the A321 type. These have an average age of 13.2 years. American’s aircraft involved in this incident was a “Transcon” type and was delivered to the carrier in February 2014.

This aircraft type is equipped with two IAE engines. let’s look at how AA has configured this aircraft type:

Cabin Class Seats & Type Configuration Row Pitch Seat Width Seat Recline IFE Display Notes

The aircraft had been cleared for takeoff. However, there was one problem: Aerologic’s flight 3S619 was on the way. Aerologic is a part of Lufthansa Group and operates a fleet of twenty-seven aircraft of the same type. These have an average age of 8.2 years. Here are the details of the other aircraft involved in the incident:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) noted that AeroLogic Flight 619 crossed runway 25R at LAX “without authorization” just as AA 2453 had been cleared for departure.

AeroLogic flight 3S619 landed on Runway 25L and exited via a high-speed taxiway to the right. This meant that the plane was between Runways 25L and 25R – where American Airlines flight AA2453 was preparing to takeoff. The ATC tower cleared AA2453 for takeoff. It also instructed 3S619 to cross Runway 25L, which would take AeroLogic’s 777 to the cargo apron located south of it. Instead, 3S619 turned right again and crossed Runway 25R—directly into the path of AA2453, which was already accelerating for takeoff.

As soon as the Air traffic control got wind of the incident, it immediately ordered the crew of American Airlines to cancel takeoff clearance. CNN reported about the conversation:

“German Cargo 619, Stop,” the LAX air traffic controller said urgently.
“We are on the runway,” the cargo pilot responded.

“American 2453, cancel takeoff clearance,” the controller said in the LiveATC audio.
“2453 is stopping,” the American Airlines pilot responded.

According to FlightRadar24, at the moment the decision was taken, the A321 was traveling at approximately 167 miles per hour (about 268 km/h). A critic noted that the fact that the runway from where the American Airlines flight was taking off was two and a half miles was quite fortuitous. At their closest point, the two aircraft had come within a separation of about 5,200 feet (roughly one mile) at their closest point. The incident led to the American Airlines operated flight to depart from Boston about two and a half hours later.

The worst accident in the history of aviation involved a collision of two Boeing 747 jets in Tenerife Airport in 1977. Let’s have a look at a few runway incursions and how they have changed aviation:

Date / Location Aircraft involved Type of conflict / incursion Outcome / severity
1991, Los Angeles USAir Boeing 737 & Aeroméxico DC-9
  • Runway collision due to ATC error
  • According to ASN, “Both aircraft caught fire and slid to the left into an unoccupied fire station“.
35 fatalities, 29 injuries
May 6, 2025  LaGuardia Airport, New York, USA
  • Republic Airways jet & United Airlines plane (taxiing)
  • the air traffic controller was quoted in AP News to have said to to the pilot of the Republic Airways jet: “Sorry, I thought United had cleared well before that.”
  • One aircraft on runway still taxiing; another starting takeoff roll.
  • Near-collision avoided
  • Takeoff aborted; some passengers injured. FAA/NTSB investigating

On 19 October 2024 Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700 and a single-engine Diamond DA40
  • The aircraft came within 857ft (261m) of each other on the same runway
No injuries, near miss
