Delta Doubles Down on Europe, Extends Flights to These 3 Cities

Delta Air Lines (DL) is extending three of its European non-stop routes beyond the summer 2026 schedule, keeping flights to Catania, Rome, and Porto active through January 2027. This decision is driven by strong forward bookings and sustained transatlantic demand on these city pairs, signaling confidence in the commercial viability of these markets even during the Northern Hemisphere winter.

According to a report in Simple Flying, the extended routes include New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA), Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), and JFK to Porto Airport (OPO). The publication said that aviation analytics firm Cirium confirmed that all three services will operate using mid-size widebody aircraft, calibrated to meet winter demand without overcommitting seat capacity.

Delta’s Daily Non-Stop Winter Flights on the

New York– Catania route

Delta’s non-stop service between JFK and Catania remains the sole direct connection from New York to Sicily. Operating daily aboard a Boeing 767-300ER, the flight covers approximately nine hours and ten minutes, featuring all four Delta cabin products: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Delta Main Cabin.

Competitors include:

  • Air Canada (AC) from Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL)
  • United Airlines (UA) from Newark (EWR) to nearby Palermo Airport (PMO).

Minneapolis– Rome Returns After Nine Years

Delta’s MSP-FCO link resumed in 2025 after being dormant since 2016. For the winter extension, the airline will operate the route three times per week using an Airbus A330-200, replacing the A330-900 used in summer 2026.

This route complements Delta’s other year-round services to Rome from Atlanta (ATL), Boston (BOS), and JFK, while Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is also scheduled to begin seasonal Delta flights to Rome starting May 6, 2026.

New York JFK – Porto OPO: Winter-First Service

The JFK-OPO route launches May 21, 2026, and will operate three times weekly aboard a Boeing 767-300ER, continuing through January 2027. This marks one of the few transatlantic flights to Porto maintained over winter.

Delta remains the only carrier offering a non-stop service from JFK to Porto. United Airlines operates from Newark (EWR), and TAP Air Portugal serves Porto from both EWR and Boston Logan (BOS). Canadian carriers such as Air Canada and Air Transat offer seasonal services to Porto, but Delta, UA, and TAP remain the only U.S.-based non-stop options.

What Delta’s Extensions Reveal About Transatlantic Demand

Extending non-stop services into the winter season demonstrates that demand data, rather than seasonal speculation, drives Delta’s strategic decisions. Smaller European markets like Catania and Porto show sufficient forward bookings to justify continuation, even in traditionally slow months.

The use of mid-size widebody aircraft — Boeing 767-300ER and Airbus A330-200 — allows Delta to maintain frequency while managing capacity effectively. These aircraft types balance operational costs with passenger comfort, making them ideal for routes with moderate winter demand.
