Nepal Airlines (RA) has begun preparations to launch direct flights between Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), Kathmandu and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC), Dhaka, KhabarHub reported. The move comes as the airline seeks to fill a long-standing gap in its international network despite growing demand between Nepal and Bangladesh.

The same source also revealed that the airline has formed a feasibility study subcommittee to evaluate operational, commercial, and logistical aspects of the route. Officials say the initiative reflects a broader strategy to expand international services while improving competitiveness against regional carriers already operating on the sector. This comes against the backdrop of Etihad expanding its services to the same airport in Dhaka.
Nepal Airlines Plans Route to Dhaka
Nepal Airlines has initiated groundwork to assess the viability of Kathmandu–Dhaka operations, focusing on passenger demand, scheduling, and aircraft utilization. The study committee will determine flight frequency, pricing strategy, and potential partnerships before final approval.

Subash Rijal, Director of the Operations Department and a senior captain, stated that the airline aims to address a notable absence in its network. Nepal’s national carrier has historically not served Dhaka, even though the two capitals are geographically close and share growing economic and tourism ties.
The proposed route also aligns with Nepal Airlines’ efforts to optimize its narrow-body fleet, particularly for short- to medium-haul regional destinations. The Nepalese flag carrier that has been mired in cases of shady politics, has two A320s in its fleet.

Competitive Landscape of Nepal Airlines
At present, Bangladeshi carrier Biman Airlines operates regular services between Kathmandu and Dhaka. Himalaya Airlines, a Nepali carrier that only operates internationally, also connects Kathmandu and Dhaka.
Nepal Airlines will need to position itself carefully in terms of pricing, service quality, and schedule convenience. Competitive fares and reliable on-time performance will be critical for capturing market share.

While Biman uses the Boeing 737-800 on this route, Himalayan operates its A320sharkelets on this route.
Nepal Airlines’ Network Expansion
Alongside its Dhaka plans, Nepal Airlines has recently increased its regional presence by expanding flights on the Kathmandu–Delhi–Kathmandu route. Since March 31, the airline has added three weekly frequencies, bringing the total to 10 flights per week.
The increase on the Delhi sector signals renewed focus on high-demand routes that generate consistent revenue. It also demonstrates the airline’s intent to strengthen its foothold in key South Asian markets.
In a parallel move, the corporation has established a Cargo Management System Study Task Force to improve cargo handling and logistics. Officials say this initiative will help streamline operations and unlock additional revenue streams from freight services.
