Unruly Passengers Disrupt Delta Connection Bombardier CRJ900 Flight From Indianapolis To New York LaGuardia

INDIANAPOLIS, 31 May- Unruly passengers caused disruptions and delays in a Delta Connection flight on Friday.

Delta Connection Flight DL4994, operated by Endeavor Air, was delayed from Indianapolis International Airport(IND) to New York La Guardia Airport(LGA) due to a heated argument between a female passenger and the crew. The dispute reportedly began over the placement of the passenger’s bag, escalating when she used threatening language onboard the flight.

According to Delta Airlines, the flight from Indianapolis International Airport to LaGuardia Airport was thrown off schedule by about an hour and a half because of the delay. Some passengers’ behavior constituted an emergency for crews in Indianapolis, hence returning the plane to the gate and deboarding.

Delta released  a statement explaining the sequence of events,

“Endeavor Air flight 4994 operating as Delta Connection from Indianapolis to New York – LaGuardia was forced to return to the gate due to unruly passengers on board. The passengers were deplaned and the aircraft continued its journey to their final destination. We apologize to our customers for the disruption in their travel plans.”

The flight’s scheduled departure time was 14:53, while the expected arrival time in New York was 17:02. However, following the incident, the flight departed at 16:49  and reached New York at 18:19.

But, What Actually happened?

According to the documents released by the court, the crew repeatedly asked the woman to secure her bag under her seat for the takeoff. Despite the crew’s multiple requests, no less than five times, the woman started an argument. As a result of the woman’s stubbornness, other passengers were forced to deplane, allowing law enforcement to resolve the issue.

Once all the passengers were off the aircraft, the three disruptive women began using inappropriate language with the airport police. According to court records, two of the women were argumentative with the police. The officers, in their duty to maintain peace, warned the women that they’d be arrested if they continued to disrupt the peace of other traveling passengers.

The three women were then escorted by the officers off the jet bridge, during which the woman who had caused the initial disturbance began raising her voice again. Court records show that the woman who initially refused to put her bag under the seat and later raised her voice was arrested for disorderly conduct that disturbs the peace in an airport — a Level 6 Felony.

The police identified the arrestee as Shari Ann Chinnis, 37 years old.

According to Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) reports, this incident is part of a larger trend, as the FAA reported over 600 disruptive incidents in 2023. Passengers commended the airline for its swift and effective actions in handling the situation, ensuring safety for everyone onboard. Despite the delay, witnesses believe that Delta managed the situation with commendable efficiency.
