In our previous articles, we touched upon the busiest European airports of 2024 where airports such as Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, and Istanbul Airport  made it to the list. The airports that were the busiest international airports for the same year were not the same as the busiest global airports. In this article, we are going to shed light upon the busiest airports in the world in 2024 by region. The list is based on the statistics presented by Official Airline Guide (OAG). The number one busiest airports in each region is calculated by the total number of available seats in the airport which includes both the domestic and international flights.

Busiest Airport in Asia Pacific Region

Haneda Airport (HND) of Japan officially known as Tokyo International Airport is a key hub for domestic and international flights. It handles a large number of international flights all over the globe.

Haneda Airport, opened on August 15, 1931, is a hub for All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL). Also, it is an operating base for Air Do, Skymark Airlines, Solaseed Air and StarFlyer.

Haneda served as a domestic airport before 2014. After that, with its extension to three terminals, HND functioned as an international airport.

Tokyo Haneda became the 3rd busiest airport worldwide for 2024 with an impressive capacity of  55.2 million seats. Likewise, it handled approximately 78.4 million passengers in 2023 while it recorded about 26.6 million passengers in 2021. HND has retained the title of the world’s third busiest airport as per the report of February, 2025 by OAG.

Bogota Airport (BOG) of Colombia is an international airport. It is the main gateway of the country. It is estimated that BOG would be able to accommodate up to 100 million passengers annually by the year 2037.

Bogota, opened on December 10, 1959, is a hub for Aerospace, Avianca, Avianca Cargo, Avianca Express, Copa Airlines Colombia, LATAM Airlines, Colombia, LATAM Cargo Colombia and SATENA. Also, it is an operating base for AerCaribe, Central Charter de, Colombia, Clic Air, Halicol, SADELCA, SAEP and Wingo.

Bogota handled 45,802,360 passengers in the year 2024 which ranked it as the busiest airport in South America continuously for three years. In addition to this, it is the busiest airport in all of Latin America, exceeding Benito Juarez International Airport (AICM) of Mexico city.

El Dorado Airport has been carrying out the expansion projects to accommodate the increasing number of passengers which includes the additional apron space, waiting area, security checkpoints, boarding gates and also, improvements in Terminal 2.

Busiest Airport in Middle East and Africa

Dubai International Airport (DXB) of the United Arab Emirates is the busiest international airport in the Middle East ranked by total passengers per year, including both terminal and transit passengers. It has become the global leader in air travel. Not only that, it was named the world’s luxurious airport by the British travel insurance provider AllClear.

Dubai Airport, opened on 30 September 1960, is a hub for Emirates, FedEx Express and flydubai. Also, it is an operating base for Air India Express, Coyne Airways and IndiGo.

Dubai Airport handled 92.3 million passengers according to the 2024 statistics. Moreover, DXB has become the busiest international airport in the world for the tenth consecutive year (international capacity) with a total of 4,782,140 seats available.Now, Dubai is the biggest tourism and trade hub in the Middle East. In addition to this, DXB has continued to be the busiest airport in the world with 4.8 million seat capacity, shown by the report of OAG in February, 2025.

Atlanta Hartsfield- Jackson International Airport

Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in the Georgia of the U.S. is the primary international airport. It has been the world’s busiest airport by passenger traffic and also by aircraft movements.

According to the 2024 report of OAG, Atlanta Hartsfield- Jackson International Airport has retained its position as the world’s busiest airport by handling 62.7 million seats. However, with reference to the statistics of February, 2025, prepared by the OAG shows that ATL has been ranked as the second busiest airport with 4.6 million seat capacity.
