Ethiopian Airlines has emerged victorious over Kenya Airways in the struggle for dominance in East Africa. Through proper planning, investment, and recognizing the importance of making air travel accessible rather than a luxury, Ethiopian Airlines has gained the influence it had been seeking in the region. Meanwhile, Kenya Airways has fallen behind due to poor planning and political interference.

The Steady Growth of Ethiopian Airways

Ethiopia, along with Kenya, is trying to find its way into the East African region. Both nations are better off compared to their neighbors and have opened up services to connect with the world. Countries in this region usually operate export and service-oriented economies that help establish overseas relationships and influence others. To establish their control over East Africa, Kenya, and Ethiopia have focused on airlines as they make heavy investments in such areas and also shape trade and travel preferences.

The Decline of Kenya Airways

Kenya Airways has recently been overtaken by Ethiopian Airlines in several key respects. In the early 2000s, these two airlines were at par with one another. However, Ethiopian Airlines’ strategic planning and low political interference have enabled it to steadily grow. It started with about twenty planes at the beginning of the century. Now, it operates 128 aircraft, while expecting 70 more in the future. Ethiopia remains focused on its 20-year plan. It is the leading airline in aviation technology, introducing jets and B787 Dreamlines to the continent, and is a part of many global alliances.

On the other hand, Kenyan Airways has suffered major losses. From being on par with Ethiopian Airways during the early 2000s, it now only operates 32 planes today without any expansion plans. Poor decisions, political interference, and the pandemic have led to its downfall. The future of Kenya Airways is questionable. Some unlikely aid is required to get it afloat again.

What Does this Imply for East Africa?

Ethiopian Airlines’ dominance means a prosperous future for the region. An increase in tourism, socio-economic development, and trade is expected. Prominence in these sectors assures the increasing wealth and influence of Ethiopia. The people also benefit from this as an increase in trade means more open and competitive markets and a lot of new opportunities. Ethiopian Airlines has the opportunity to be the hub for all trade, tourism, and travel. The people also become more keen to choose Ethiopian Airlines in their travels. Also, the viewpoint of the African people in air travel being a luxury can change after the increase in wealth in the region.
