Apple announced various software updates in their new iOS update. In that same event, Apple also announced that they plan to launch satellite messaging from iPhone to iPhone and satellite SMS to Android. To use the satellite, users should hold the phone in the direction of the satellite. The messaging will be end-to-end encrypted to protect the privacy of the user.
Apple used the same technology used in some emergencies, where a satellite conveys a message in the case of an emergency detected by the device through the satellite. When Wi-Fi is not available, it could send the message through a satellite. This update will be viable from iPhone 14 and upwards only. To use this feature, you will need to be out in the open. Apple was the first company to bring out a satellite connection for the iPhone 14. To connect to the satellite, Apple has created tailored parts and algorithms that can take the unique frequency of the satellite as input. They are partnered with Globalstar for satellite connection and components.
Since Apple is quite serious about their privacy, they also made the message end-to-end encrypted, making it very secure to send messages through satellite. The main problem with satellite messaging is that if anyone tunes into the satellite frequency, they can get access. But since it is end-to-end encrypted, that problem is also solved. The usability of the feature inside an airplane may be in doubt, as it is clearly stated that users need to be outside with a clear view of the sky, which is not possible in a covered airplane.
Additionally, even if the messaging feature were available, aviation companies might not allow it because some already offer similar services through premium plans, which could be economically impacted. For instance, some airlines, like United Airlines and Delta Airlines, already have plans that allow their users to send messages via satellite without an internet connection.
Due to Apple’s massive success, many companies have also added satellite to their phones. Verizon recently closed a $100 million deal with a satellite company that provides a direct connection from cellular phone to satellite. Additionally, Apple has signed a deal with Global Star in which they will cover 95 percent of the cost that is required to launch the satellite. They have also lent them 252 million dollars to launch various satellites to connect with their iPhones and watches for features such as SOS emergency and satellite messaging.
