Etihad Business Class Passenger Downgraded on Flight EY218, says $200 Voucher and 50–70% Fare Refund Were Withdrawn

A passenger has accused Etihad Airways (EY) of downgrading him from Business Class to Economy on a flight between Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), New Delhi, after a last-minute aircraft swap.

The passenger, a doctor based in Gurgaon, said the downgrade happened despite holding a confirmed Business Class ticket on Etihad Airways Flight EY218. He further alleged that the airline later withdrew a compensation voucher that had initially been promised to affected travelers.

Etihad Passenger Claims Business Class Downgrade on Abu Dhabi–Delhi Flight

Dr. Virender Sheorain detailed the incident on X, calling it his worst flying experience despite purchasing a Business Class ticket.  According to his account, passengers were informed only after reaching the boarding gate that the scheduled aircraft had been replaced with another that lacked a Business Class cabin.

As a result, travelers with confirmed Business Class bookings were reassigned to Economy Class for the overnight service from Abu Dhabi to New Delhi. Dr. Sheorain said he had deliberately chosen Business Class due to a medical condition that required a more comfortable journey.

Instead, he was required to travel overnight in Economy, which he said made the flight physically taxing. Speaking to News18, he added that he landed in New Delhi at around 3:00 a.m. after what he described as a difficult and uncomfortable trip.

Passenger Says Promised Compensation Was Later Withdrawn

According to Dr. Sheorain, Etihad representatives initially advised affected passengers that they would receive compensation in the form of a $200 travel voucher along with a refund covering roughly 50% to 70% of the fare for the downgraded segment. He later claimed that the airline reversed its decision regarding the voucher.

In his social media post, the doctor alleged that airline staff later informed passengers the voucher had been offered in error and therefore would not be issued. He said the lack of clear communication and transparency was more disappointing than the downgrade itself. According to Dr. Sheorain, passengers paying for premium cabins deserve respectful treatment and timely communication whenever operational issues prevent airlines from delivering the booked service.

“My worst airline experience ever—and that too after paying for a Business Class ticket.”

He shared his experience on X, stating that passengers on Etihad Flight EY218 from Abu Dhabi to New Delhi on July 25, 2026, were informed only at the boarding gate that the aircraft had been changed, resulting in the loss of the Business Class cabin.

Why Etihad Airways Is Expanding its Fleet Despite Continued Uncertainty in the Middle East?

Other Travelers Report Similar Experiences

The post gained significant traction on X, with several users claiming they had faced comparable situations. One traveler alleged that after paying for extra legroom seats on an Etihad itinerary from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM), Mumbai, to New York via Abu Dhabi, they were reassigned to regular Economy seats without advance notice.

The passenger also criticized the airline’s ground handling, alleging staff were unhelpful and that no refund was provided. Another user commented that aircraft substitutions leading to cabin downgrades have occurred on some India-bound connecting flights, suggesting such incidents are not unusual when airlines make operational equipment changes.

Several others expressed disappointment over the reported incident, arguing that passengers should receive appropriate compensation whenever premium services cannot be delivered. These comments reflect the views of individual social media users and have not been independently verified.

Etihad Acknowledges Complaint

Etihad Airways responded publicly to Dr. Sheorain’s post on X. The airline apologized for his experience and requested that he continue the conversation through direct messages by sharing his booking reference. Etihad said it would review the booking and determine the best way to assist him. At the time of writing, the airline has not provided further details regarding the aircraft substitution, the reported compensation offer, or the final resolution of the complaint.

Aircraft changes can occur for operational reasons, including maintenance requirements, scheduling adjustments, or fleet availability. In some cases, replacement aircraft feature different cabin layouts, which may affect seat assignments and premium cabin availability.

Although compensation policies differ by airline and jurisdiction, passengers who are involuntarily downgraded are generally entitled to a refund of the fare difference in accordance with the airline’s conditions of carriage and any applicable aviation regulations.
