A British Columbia court has imposed an additional 15-year prison sentence on Tanner Fox, the man already serving a life term for the murder of former Air India (AI) bombing suspect Ripudaman Singh Malik. The latest conviction stems from the fatal shooting of Chad Colivas in Abbotsford in 2022, a case authorities say is entirely separate from Malik’s killing.
According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), Fox pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a firearm in connection with Colivas’ death. While Fox is already incarcerated for Malik’s murder, the new sentence relates to an unrelated incident near Abbotsford International Airport (YXX).
Court Hands Tanner Fox Additional 15-Year Sentence
IHIT said 25-year-old Tanner Fox admitted to manslaughter with a firearm and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The victim, 41-year-old Chad Colivas of Abbotsford, died after being shot at his residence on March 21, 2022.
Investigators said officers responded to the home and discovered Colivas suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
IHIT spokesperson Freda Fong said Colivas was unarmed when he confronted Fox, who had unlawfully entered the property. Police also concluded that the homicide was not linked to gang activity.
Fox entered his guilty plea in April 2026, with the sentence formally delivered on Wednesday.
Home Invasion Also Resulted in Second Conviction
The investigation into Colivas’ death led to Fox’s arrest in 2023 alongside 30-year-old Laetitia Acera.
Acera later pleaded guilty to a break-and-enter charge connected to the incident. She was sentenced to four years in prison and will serve an additional two years on probation after her release.
Prosecutors said Fox’s manslaughter conviction arose from the violent confrontation that unfolded inside the Abbotsford residence.
Separate From Ripudaman Singh Malik Murder
The latest conviction is independent of Fox’s role in the 2022 killing of Ripudaman Singh Malik.
Malik was fatally shot on July 14, 2022, while sitting inside his Tesla in a Surrey, British Columbia, business park. Fox and another man subsequently pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the high-profile case.
Malik had previously faced charges over the 1985 Air India bombing but was acquitted. The bombing remains one of the deadliest aviation terror attacks in history.
Already Serving Life Imprisonment
In 2025, Fox received a life sentence with no eligibility for parole for 20 years after his conviction for Malik’s murder.
During the sentencing proceedings, his defense lawyer said Fox had been adopted from Thailand by a Canadian family at the age of three. Fox also told the court he was “young and dumb” when he agreed to carry out the contract killing.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed who they believe orchestrated Malik’s murder.
Investigators Say Cases Are Unrelated
Police have repeatedly emphasized that the homicide of Chad Colivas bears no connection to the assassination of Ripudaman Singh Malik.
While Fox’s latest 15-year sentence will run in addition to his existing punishment, it does not change the 20-year period before he becomes eligible for parole under his life sentence for second-degree murder.
