Discover Airlines (4Y), the Lufthansa Group’s leisure carrier based in Germany, intends to grow its fleet to 40 aircraft by mid-2028. Starting in mid-2027, Discover will gradually introduce four Airbus A350-900s as the future flagship of its long-haul operations.
This expansion will span both long-haul and short/medium-haul segments: by 2026, the long-haul fleet will increase to 16 Airbus A330-300s, while the short/medium-haul fleet will expand to 20 Airbus A320s by 2028. Discover’s latest announcement comes around a time when carriers around Europe, such as SWISS are expecting deliveries of the Airbus A350s.

In 2026, Discover plans to retire its three Airbus A330-200s and bring in five additional A330-300s, resulting in a long-haul fleet of 16 A330-300s by year end. All of the A330-200s operated by the airline are over 20 years old, as you can see from the details in the table below:
| Registration | Configuration | Delivery Date | Age (Years) |
|---|---|---|---|
| D-AXGB | C22W17Y231 | Sep 2023 | 20.3 Years |
| D-AXGE | C32W17Y195 | Sep 2023 | 21.2 Years |
| D-AXGF | C32W17Y195 | Sep 2023 | 21.3 Years |
Discover’s A330-300s have an average age of 18.9 years. The oldest of these is registered D-AFYR and is only 9.7 years old. Three A330-300s the carrier operates were delivered to it in September 2023 and are configured C30W28Y225. These three are Discover’s oldest aircraft of this type and are registered:
- D-AIKA
- D-AIKB
- D-AIKC
To expand its short and medium-haul growth, the airline is set to acquire two additional Airbus A320s will enter service in 2026. Another two A320s will join by mid-2028, bringing the total to 20 narrowbodies. In total, Discover aims to operate 40 aircraft by mid-2028 (30 current + 10 additions).

Why is Discover Set to Introduce the Airbus A350?
The Airbus A350-900 is one of the most modern wide-body aircraft in service. It uses advanced composite materials, features efficient engines, and is designed for lower fuel burn, reduced noise, and improved cabin comfort (enhanced humidity and lower cabin pressure).
Airbus itself claims that the A350 is a “predominantly composite material aircraft (up to 54%), complemented by titanium and advanced metallic alloys“. The aircraft’s Operating Weight Empty (OWE) is 20t less than the current 777-300ERs that it replaces. An example of this was evident in British Airways replacing its operations using the Boeing 777 from London Heathrow to Nashville and replacing with the A350.
According to Lufthansa, the A350 can:
- Achieve fuel consumption of roughly 2.5 litres of kerosene per passenger per 100 km—approximately 30 % less than comparable older models.
- Produce half the noise in a comparable aircraft type
Bernd Bauer, CEO of Discover Airlines, echoed these sentiments when he said:
“With the further development and expansion of our fleet – including the planned deployment of the Airbus A350 – we are further strengthening our existing offering, with even more comfort and attractive options for our guests. Additional aircraft, greater range, and a new cabin product will enable us to respond even better to the needs of travelers. We look forward to flying even more people on vacation in the future, while at the same time making an important contribution to strengthening the Lufthansa Group in the leisure and private travel segment. Now it is time for us to quickly create the conditions for integrating the Airbus A350 into our fleet.”
For Discover Airlines, the A350 introduction offers several strategic benefits:
-
Extended route reach into long-range leisure markets previously inaccessible
-
Enhanced passenger experience and competitiveness
-
Fleet renewal and operational efficiency
-
Synergies within the Lufthansa Group for fleet and network planning
Corporate alignment with Lufthansa’s broader fleet modernization strategy also supports Discover’s move. The Group is actively investing in fuel-efficient aircraft to reduce emissions and operating costs.

Past Expansions and Comparable Cases
To understand Discover’s move in context, here is a table comparing similar fleet expansions or introduction of new widebodies by leisure or network carriers:
| Airline / Event | Fleet expansion / widebody introduction | Outcome / remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Edelweiss Air (Swiss leisure unit) | Transition from A340-300 to A350-900s | Improved efficiency and commonality within Lufthansa Group |
| Lufthansa mainline | Gradual retirement of older widebodies, expansion of A350 and modern long-haul fleet | Aligns with broader group modernization strategy |
| Discover Airlines (this case) | Introduction of A350, expansion of A330 and A320 fleets | Expected to drive growth and new route openings |

How might Discover configure its Airbus A350s?
Most of Discover Airlines’ A330s in the following way:
| Cabin Class | Layout & Configuration | Seat Specs | Entertainment | Power Options | Extra Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Class | 22 seats, Collins Diamond Parallel platform, 2-2-2 layout | Converts to 78″ flat bed; Seat width: 20″; Row pitch: 64″ | 11.7″ HD touchscreen display | Universal AC + USB-A sockets | Two storage compartments beneath screen for bottles, reading material, and small bag |
| Premium Economy | 17 ZIMmagic seats, 2-3-2 configuration, ladder-style footrest | Seat width: 19″ (23″ shoulder width); Recline: 8″; Row pitch: 38″ | 11.7″ HD touchscreen display | Universal AC + USB-A sockets | Front row seats with integrated leg-rest; Seats 10AC & 11AC used as crew rest with extra legroom |
| Economy | 231 seats, 2-4-2 configuration across two cabins | Seat width: 18″; Recline: 6″; Row pitch: 34″ (rows 14–18), 31″ (rows 19 aft) | 9″ HD touchscreen display | USB-A socket | Standard seating with dual-cabin layout |

As this was the configuration on Discover’s A330s, one might feel that this configuration will also be possible on the A350s. However, One Mile at a Time had a different observation:
“In 2021, Lufthansa opportunistically picked up four ex-Philippine Airlines A350s, as the carrier was going through a reorganization. Lufthansa maintained the cabin interiors, which funny enough, actually elevated Lufthansa’s business class experience considerably, given that these planes have Thompson Aero Vantage XL seats. There was always the question of what Lufthansa would eventually do with these planes, so it’s not surprising that they’re now going to a different subsidiary….So when these four special A350s are taken over by Discover Airlines, you can expect that interiors will be maintained. It’ll be the first time that we see direct aisle access from all business class seats on the carrier…”
These external assessments partly dovetail with the airline’s own statements, reinforcing the idea that Discover’s A350 introduction is a strategic group-level alignment rather than an isolated order.
All in All
Discover Airlines’ fleet expansion plan has a phased approach—first it will be strengthening the A330 fleet and then introducing A350s. This will allow for smoother transition and risk mitigation. Here’s one of the ways Lufthansa configures its A350s:

| Cabin Class | Seats & Configuration | Seat Width | Recline / Bed Length | Row Pitch | In-flight Entertainment | Power Options | Additional Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Class | 48 Collins Diamond Parallel seats in 2-2-2 layout | 20″ | Converts to 78″ flat bed | 64″ | 11.7″ HD touchscreen display | Universal AC and USB-A sockets | Two storage compartments under each screen for bottles, reading materials, and small bags |
| Premium Economy | 21 ZIMmagic seats in 2-3-2 layout | 19″ (23″ shoulder width) | 8″ recline | 38″ | 11.7″ HD touchscreen display | Universal AC and USB-A sockets | Ladder-style footrest; front row seats with integrated leg- and foot-rest |
| Economy Class | 224 Recaro Safran Z300 seats in 3-3-3 layout (two cabins) | 18″ | 6″ recline | 31″ | 9″ HD touchscreen display | USB-A socket | — |

We will have to watch of Discover opts for this configuration for the A350s it is getting.
